Hair implantation is done to place additional hair on the part of your head where you may be experiencing hair loss or alopecia. This procedure is performed by extracting hair from a dense part of a person’s head or other body parts and implanting it where there is hair loss.
Nearly 60 and 50% of men and women respectively suffer some alopecia universally. In handling this, people primarily administer unprescribed products, such as Loniten.
Transplanting hair is another procedure for repairing hair. The foremost hair transplant procedure was carried out with isolated follicles from the skull in Japan in 1939. In succeeding years, the “plug” procedure was invented, which entailed implanting much hair.
Through the years, surgeons utilised micro (follicular) and mini (follicular-grouping) grafting procedures to reduce the presence of implanted hair on the skull.
Are hair implants effective?
Generally, the procedure of hair implantation is more efficient in comparison to unprescribed hair repair products, although they are some points to note:
- In approximately 3-4months, 10 -8% of implanted hair will ultimately develop back
- As with regular hair, the implanted hair will decrease over time
- People with stagnant hair strands may have less productive hair implants. Although a research study in 2016 proposes that plasma treatment may help about 75% of people or more who underwent hair transplantation fully recover their hair
The hair implant procedure does not function for everyone. It is primarily employed to recover natural hair loss or hair loss due to an injury.
SKINCARE GUIDE FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE
Hair implant is performed with already existing hair; hence, they are not as productive for people with the following:
- Extensive hair loss
- Alopecia resulting from chemotherapy or other forms of treatments
- Deep skull scabs resulting from wounds
What is the cost of a hair implant?
For each session, hair implants may vary from £3,069 to £11,509
The conclusive expenses may hinge on:
- The magnitude of the hair implant treatment
- The accessibility of the specialist in your region
- The surgeon’s skill
- The procedure to be used for surgery
Insurance companies would not pay for hair implants because they see them as cosmetic processes.
Maintenance prescription may also amplify the conclusive expenses.
How does a hair implant function?
A hair implant involves taking hair from one part of your hair to another area where you lack hair. The hair is normally gotten from the rear of your head, but it could also be obtained from other places on your body.
Your doctor will disinfect the donor area before the procedure, using an anaesthetic to numb the pain. If you do not want to be awake during the procedure, you can ask to be sedated. The medical surgeon then performs either the FUE or FUT transplant procedure.
Follicular Unit Transplant Procedure (FUT)
This procedure is otherwise known as FUSS– follicular unit strip surgery– The following are the steps utilised in this procedure:
- A surgical knife is used to remove a part of your scalp from behind your head. This piece is usually six to ten inches long, but it can extend from one ear to another.
- The donor area is then stitched.
- Using a surgical knife, your medical specialist then isolates the piece of scalp into tiny pieces; these pieces may be as many as two thousand portions– grafts. Most of these fragments may comprise only one strand of hair each.
- Your surgeon creates tiny holes in the area where the hair will be implanted.
- Your doctor places the hairs into tiny holes. This procedure is known as grafting.
- The surgical area is then bandaged.
The particular quantity of grafts that are used on you is based on the following factors:
- Your kind of hair
- The size of the donor area
- The quality and quantity of hair
- The colour of the hair
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Steps you need to take for an FUE transplant includes
- You should shave the hair at the rear of your head
- Hair strands will extract from your skull’s skin. There may have minor marks to show for this.
- Like the FUT procedure, tiny holes will make in your skull, to place the hair strands.
- Then surgical area will be bandaged or dressed.
The Healing Process
The FUE and FUE procedures may take many hours or days to complete, respectively. Although this also largely relies on the surgical procedure carried out. In some cases, you will return the very day after the surgery.
Once the procedure is over, the bandages will take off. Your surgeon might administer triamcinolone to manage the swelling. In cases there is swelling in the surgical area, your doctor may prescribe the following medications if you feel pain or discomfort at the donor area or the implant site:
- Pain relievers, including Ibuprofen (Advil)
- Medications to prevent any disease
- Medicines to ease swelling, e.g. oral steroids
- Medications to help facilitate rapid hair improvement, including Rogaine or finasteride
Vital maintenance tips after hair implant surgery
- Only wash your hair a few days after the surgery. For the first few weeks, use soft hair care products.
- You should return to your regular routines in about three weeks.
- Avoid the transplant area for about three weeks. Do not comb or brush the site.
- Unless your doctor approves, do not put on any clothing that will touch the site.
- Stay away from exercise for a week
